Chris Drysdale – Australian Animal Coasters

We love it when our customers enjoy sharing their woodworking projects with us and Chris Drysdale is no exception.

He may have come to woodworking later in life but crafting has been his passion for many years and it certainly doesn't stop him from experimenting with Design & Make clipart to create some amazing projects!

Chris takes pride in his work and he loves all the different facets of wood art with 3-dimensional carving rapidly becoming a popular component of his work as he cuts in many different timber mediums. He recently started using resin in conjunction with carving different models and has produced this beautiful collection of Australian animal-themed cutting boards, drink coasters and wine bottle holders using a combination of 3D modeling with Design & Make clipart. You can see the variety of images he uses from the Design & Make library of models to create these unique creature comforts without the need for freehand drawing or modeling experience! He then adds artistic lettering to make custom designs that give a stunning effect.

The cutting board was carved with an apple in the centre before the apple was coloured and topped up with resin to just below the fine edge. This stops the resin scoring when turned over for more robust cutting. The coasters were produced in the same way but the wine coaster was cut out of 25mm and 30mm thick wood pocketing with the centre having a 6mm outer edge then Chris carved the 3D model out of 9mm beech, stained it with natural oil dyes and once dry he then glued them to the base of the wine bottle holder. To finish he painted a resin seal coat so when pouring the final resin there was no further bleeding into the items.

Recently completed was a 3D carved bunch of grapes with 3 different colours of livos natural dye topped with resin to give a good form base for placing a wine bottle. The base is made from a variety of hardwoods and finished with German counter top livos oil.

Chris creates a wide range of wood-crafted items for the home and we've been amazed at his talents in combining high-quality handcrafting with intricate 3D modeling techniques and customized clipart. As well as his online shop, he also focuses time on producing bespoke commissions with many made from Swedish architectural grade plywood as well as rare Australian timbers. As a reflection of his skill, he has won a number of awards in pen design using special inlays and 3-dimensional carving.
